Unexplored Phenomena
Before this class, I never knew that we had a sixth sense. However, after discussing how our sixth sense is something like our gut feeling or intuition, I was reminded about past moments where my gut feeling saved me or proved me right.
In Abram’s Spell of the Sensuous, what I found particularly interesting is how he talked about the unique nature of animals that we do not see as humans. He mentions that we view “nonhuman nature only as it has been circumscribed by our civilization and its technologies” and that we only see nature as a set of resources. I wonder what animal behavior is like, undisturbed, in their natural habitats. The Amazonian rainforest is a perfect example of something nature is hiding from modern civilization.
However, besides exploring the unknown, I think that domesticated animals also have incredible phenomena that remain inexplicable. I find it fascinating how animals like dogs and cats have the ability to sense things us humans would never see coming.
One example I vividly remember is a story my mom told me about her cat growing up. My grandfather had heart problems throughout his life and sometimes he had moments where his heart beat would be very irregular. Whenever this happened, my mom’s cat would go lay down on my grandfather’s chest and purr until his heart beat slowed down.

The Amazonian rainforest is still vastly unexplored. It’s suggested that there are still over 100 uncontacted tribes residing in the rainforest, and still an incredibly vast amount of biodiversity that lies undiscovered.

Animals are so cool. One of my friends found out she was pregnant because her cat was kneading at her stomach and being unusually cuddly and protective of her. She took a pregnancy test the next day and it was positive. No human could ever predict that.
ReplyDeleteStories about animals having a sixth sense are really interesting. I remember a story from a nursing home that had a cat that would lay in a patients room for days when they were about to die. It's interesting how animals such as cats or dogs have a stronger six sense than people and know things that we do not even notice.
