Anne Rasmussen, Women, The Recited Qur’an, and Islamic Music in Indonesia - Cultural Music Trends

This was one of my favorite books because it involved music. It had introduced to me to the different styles of music all around the world. Despite the genre every culture has a certain tone to it in a sense that your are able to tell where the music was derived from and what were the artists' influences while making this piece of music. For example South American music has a certain rhythm a tempo that differentiates itself from European and American music. There are also differences in the references that are mentioned within each individual song. For example when I listen to music composed in the UK they always refer to things like "zone 6" and "Pagan". I had asked what these terms mean to my friends who reside in the UK and they said that they are the equivalent to the ghetto and snitch. It just goes to show how easily language is constructed to fit it in with individual societies, and reading this book reminded of that concept.
