PSA on Mother's Day.

I happened to watch this video today, after spending about 25 minutes in CVS looking for the 'perfect'  Mother's day card, that would 'touch' my mom's heart in just the right way. When I realized the video had to do with eliminating a sense, and relying on other senses I couldn't help but share this sentimental experiment.

PSA: Mother's day is approaching faster than you think, don't be the kid who forgets, Sunday May 10, and after you watch this video I don't see how you could! In the video we see young children blind folded (taking away their vision), but still able to identify their moms. The children use their sense of touch to pick out their mom from the group of moms; we see them touch their faces, hair, clothing, body, and then the mother and child share some type of 'special' affection (such as rubbing noses/ eskimo kisses). During our touch presentation our group attempted to explain how the use of touch has evolved over time, all the while being an extremely important sense.

This video prompted me to think about the relationship between a mother and child. I realized that the relationship began with intimate touching from the moment of conception, till post birth. The baby is physically in the mother's womb, a time where the two are almost one in the way that they are connected, the touching that is involved deals with direct contact between the baby and the mother's internal organs (can it get more intimate than that?).

Post birth, touch continues to be an important part of the mother and child relationship, as Gaby discussed in class if a baby is not given enough physical contact post birth this can cause many health issues for the baby. Since the mother is usually the one who takes a maternity leave to care for the baby it is usually her who gives the baby the affection he/she needs to strive. This close bond that is established even before the baby is born does not end after the baby matures to a child as we saw in the video, where a child can recognize their mother from a group of women just by touching.

It is clear to me that the time spent between a mother and child is extremely special, it tends to be a mothers touch that soothes a baby to sleep, or calms a child down after they have fallen, or a mother who helps mend a teenagers first broken heart. Although you might not realize on a daily basis you know your mom without even seeing her, or hearing her voice. You know her so well that you can tell it is her by the shape of her face, the texture of her skin/ hair, the feel of the clothing she is wearing. Your bond with her is much deeper than what is at 'face value.'

  1. Great post! I really liked how the blindfolded child/find the mother video emphasize the role of the senses in connecting to one's mother.
