Hidden Power of the Nose

One concept that Green discussed regarding the rabbis’ descriptions, was the need for women to perfume themselves, specifically because they are made from bone, which decays and naturally has a rotting scent. This concept heavily implies that women ‘must’ perfume themselves so that their husbands will find them attractive. Otherwise, their husbands would not want to mate with them and they would not be able to produce offspring, which is the grand finale that shows your success at being human. It is ironic that the necessity of smelling good to produce offspring has been placed on the woman, when biologically speaking, it is crucial that the man to smell good in order for a couple to be capable of producing viable offspring.  According to Dr. John Velheim in his research on consciousness, for whatever reason, if a woman mates with a man who does not smell good to her, her immune system will activate and produce a large amount of antibodies within her vaginal mucus. This means that it is much harder for a sperm to reach the egg and makes it almost impossible to conceive. Because of this, it is really the smell of the man that matters and dictates whether or not he will be able to have viable offspring; it has nothing to do with the smell of a woman!

I personally consider this to be a very significant power that a woman holds and should be given some respect. When one considers the old costumes of arranged marriages, it seems quite ridiculous that the father should be the one to choose a husband for her daughter. Of course, that’s only if the objective of the marriage was to have strong healthy children, obviously politics often got in the way. If more people were aware that women have so much power in their nose, to detect another human being with the perfect mix of DNA variability to herself, women might receive more respect when she desires intimacy and sex or the presence of another male. It is not anyone’s fault if two people with the perfect match of genetic diversity end up in the same room. It is merely chance and biology, which is what the entire survival of our species is based on. Which only adds to my belief that women should be taken more seriously when it comes to ideas about continuing and furthering a successful, healthy human race.

  1. Pretty sharp and compelling observations! I suspect that this may be why even in patriarchal cultures in which marriages are arranged for women, women often have the right to refuse a mate picked for her, even if she doesn't have the right to pick her mate herself. That would be a more adaptive mating policy, given to points you made!
