Engaging with the World
In The Spell of the Sensuous written by David Abram, he spoke about being present to the sounds, sights, smells and textures in our everyday life. In other words, that people should engage more with the Earth.
I agree with this. Yes, it's cold for a lot of the months that we're at Wheaton and no one wants to go outside much then, but when it does get warm outside it's nice to see everyone on the dimple. Whether they're taking a nap, sunbathing, studying, having a picnic with friends, reading or just sitting and doing nothing they're connecting with nature. Personally, I like the smell of the flowers around campus, the feeling of the wind blowing against my face, and the feeling of the warmth from the sun. That's when it's hot and sunny. When it's cold and snowy out, I like the feeling of the snow crunching under my shoes and the texture of the snow itself. However, what I don't like is the feeling of stepping on black ice.
When I'm at home, I love that I can smell my mom's cooking from down the hall and I love that I can smell the ocean when I'm walking on the beach or on the trails. When I'm walking along the beach at home I feel that I am definitely present in everything all around me. Like I said, I love the smell of the ocean but I also love looking at the scenery. How green the trees and plants are, how colourful the flowers are, how I can hear the birds chirping and ducks quacking and the sound of the waves crashing against each other. Being present in the moment allows me to really take everything in and appreciate the world around me.
